“Dr. Rose Kidd Beere 1859-1927”

Rose Kidd Beere was a doctor in Colorado in the nineteenth century. In 1892, she moved to Durango to practice medicine. In 1895 Governor Alva Adams asked her to take over the new State Home for Dependent and Neglected Children in Denver. In 1898, the First Colorado Infantry went to the Philippines during the Spanish-American War; and she went too, not as a doctor but as a nurse. After a year, she returned to Denver and became health officer for the Denver Public Schools. She was the doctor at the Poor Farm and ran Denver General Hospital. Dr. Rebecca Hunt will present a first-person account of Rose Kidd Beere‘s life.
Rebecca A. Hunt, is a third-generation Casper native, currently dividing her time between her Denver home and her family home on Casper Mountain. She graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1974 and the University of Oklahoma in 1997 and earned a Ph.D. in Western American History from the University of Colorado Boulder. She is on the advisory committee for History Colorado’s Center for Colorado Women’s History.

“Gone and Mostly Forgotten”

The first burial ground in Gunnison, Colorado, where the earliest pioneers are interred, drifted into oblivion about 1884. Gunnison native Bob Easterly got interested in the subject when he learned that the cemetery was on a ranch that his grandfather and father owned back in the 1930s. Sometimes called Boulevard Cemetery, it was accidentally uncovered in 1994 during a uranium mitigation project. After remediation in 1995, Boulevard once again slipped into oblivion.
Bob Easterly is a fourth-generation Coloradoan, who grew up as a rancher’s kid. He is retired from a career with two of Colorado’s pioneer financial institutions, a 30-year tour in the U.S. Naval Reserve and most recently worked in disaster recovery. He is a Past President of the Mount Evans Chapter – Sons of the American Revolution, Past Sheriff of the Denver Posse, and a member of numerous historical and genealogical societies in Colorado and Pennsylvania. He is a volunteer at the Archives and Local History Center of the Douglas County Library in Castle Rock.

“Twenty Miles of Fence: Blueprint of a Cowboy”

Twenty Miles of Fence recounts a decade of transformation when Bob West, a westerner at heart, decided to escape the pretense of his unfulfilling architectural life and to become, quite simply, a cowboy. A cowboy? That old cliché about biting off more than you can chew fittingly describes the lessons learned when West and his family bought the Devil’s Washtub Ranch in Wyoming and moved from near the yuppie haven of Boulder, Colorado. Little did West know how those years would test him, inspire him, and lead him back to his true character.

Two Brief Lessons in Colorado History Using Maps by Wes Brown
Lieutenants Abert and Peck’s daring 1845 exploration that produced the first map to focus on Colorado.
Colorado artist Hal Shelton’s mapping innovations, which had a worldwide impact: shaded relief, natural color, and ski areas.
September 28 Meeting
“1909 Glidden Auto Tour” by Lee Whiteley
The Glidden Tours, more properly known as the AAA Annual Reliability Touring Contests, passed through eastern Colorado in 1909. The fully illustrated program will document the joys and pitfalls of early-day motoring, as 30 cars traverse open prairie, pass small towns and railroad sidings, and roll through the streets of Denver and Colorado Springs. Side trips were also made to Lakeside Amusement Park, the Garden of the Gods.
A Look Back at the 2022 Talks
January 26, 2022: Shaun Boyd, Curator of Archives at History Colorado, discussed the 1924-1926 registers of the Ku Klux Klan. The registers were digitized in 2021 and in addition to being searchable online they have been mapped to show the addresses of the members.
February 23, 2022: Jane Little Botkin shared the story of the woman who led a rebellion of maids in Denver in 1916. The Girl Who Dared to Defy: Jane Street and the Rebel Maids of Denver is the title of her talk and her book.
March 23, 2022: I Will Die Like a Man! Longtime Posse Member Dennis Hagen spoke on a little known event that occurred in 1890 on Montana's Tongue River Indian Reservation.
April 27, 2022: John Wesley Anderson gave a presentation on several chapters from his book Colorado's Nearly Forgotten History, 1776-1876.
May 25, 2022: "Dr. Colorado" Tom Noel discussed his 56th book, written with Bill Hansen, Boom and Bust Colorado: From the 1859 Gold Rush to the 2020 Pandemic.
June 22, 2022: Brad Bowers presented on the Colorado-Kansas Railway and its history and impact, from his book, Bound by Steel and Stone: The Colorado-Kansas Railway and the Frontier of Enterprise in Colorado, 1890-1960.
July 27, 2022: Annual Meeting and Three Presentations - The First Hour of a History of Denver Television by Roger Dudley; Highlights from the 1924 “Colorado Cloudland” film by David Emrich; and A 50-Year History of the Tattered Cover Book Store by Mark Barnhouse.
